Punctuation Colon and Semi Colon

Punctuation Semicolon : The semicolon represents a pause of greater importance than a comma. Let us learn the use of the semicolon. It is used:

(1) To separate words or phrases in a list, when they contain commas. For example,

  • She bought vegetables such as potatoes, onions and cabbage; fruits such as bananas, grapes and oranges; and some household items.
  • (2) To separate lengthy coordinate clauses where the conjunction is omitted. For example,

  • The snow fell; the winds blew; the sky grew dark; we huddled indoors.
  • Punctuation Colon : it marks a still more complete pause than that expressed by the Semi Colon. It is used sometimes with a dash after it :

  • (1)  To introduce a quotation ; as,   Mahesh says : "Reading makes a full man, writing an exact man, speaking a ready man."
  • (2) Before enumeration, examples, etc; as  The principal parts of a verb in English are : present tense, the past tense, and the past participle.
